I am sitting at my kitchen table for a solitary and quiet meal, munching contentedly on a walnut roll, adorned with good Gruyère.
Earlier, on my way to the café to buy te rolls, miracle upon miracle! All the sidewalks on the way were completely cleared of snow, and that on Xmas evening day! A rash and brave support indeed from our public services! As you may have seen on TV yesterday, most recently, blizzards have plagued the Swedish countryside and desperate travelers fought the forces of nature in hard road battles to reach their loved ones in time.
The more pleasure to enjoy this beautiful and cosy morning! As I am looking out the window, at 9 am sharp, the first lazy sunrays barely manage to stroke our church on the hill with a rosy shimmer, whilst the lower echelons are still resting in twilight mauve. It appears, as if providence were beckoning and indicating that the world would heal again after all the troubles it is going through lately.
Be that as it may; let us forget the travails of the world at least during these holy days, which are starting so rosily, and celebrate this happy occasion as long as it lasts.

Tack för denna positiva hälsning! Själv kan jag berätta att gatorna mellan Östermalmstorg och kontoret på Storgatan och bostaden på Karlaplan är så hala att jag numera åker taxi däremellan. Utmaningen är att ta sig från porten till bildörrens handtag, och sedan vid ankomst släppa dörren för att försiktigt gå fram till nästa port. Någon skottning/sandning har jag inte sett på dessa gator i år (!). Som någon sa: ”vad f-n får jag för pengarna!?” Bara igår såg jag två rejäla fallolyckor (från bilfönstret), en med en stackars dam vars matkasse tappades med alla inköp spridda över trottoaren, en annan med en yngre man som föll illa (lyckligtvis hade han med sin någon som verkade ringa efter ambulans. Gissar att det som kommunen sparar på skottning/sandning kostar regionen mångfalt mer i sjukvårdskostnader. Men det är ju olika budgetar…

We here in Helsinki are having a white Christmas holidays which does not happen every year. We attended last Monday evening a Christmas concert in a church that is near to us. They sang a very special song that made a deep impression on us and we would like to share it with you. The words are the following:
"I believe in the sun, even when it's not shining.
I believe in love, even when I feel it not.
I believe in God, even when He is silent.”
This text, found on a wall at a concentration camp after World War 2, inspired Norwegian composer Kim André Arnesen: “Even if your freedom is taken away from you, or the people you love, your faith and hope can no one take away from you.

Auch wir wünschen Dir von ganzem Herzen Frohe Weihnachten, einen guten Rutsch ins Neue Jahr
und weiterhin alles Gute für das kommende Jahr bei bester Gesundheit.
Wir werden heute unser Weihnachtsfest bei der Familie unseres ältesten Sohnes feiern und morgen
bei uns zu Hause mit der gesamten Familie. Dies wird allerdings wieder etwas eng werden, aber wir haben es
in der Vergangenheit auch immer wieder geschafft.

Ganz herzlichen Dank für dein Mail, aus dem ich entnehme, dass es Dir soweit gut geht und du dein Leben genießen kannst. So ist es auch bei uns, wofür wir sehr, sehr dankbar sind. Fast habe ich drunter gelitten, dass das nächste Maturatreffen erst 2025 stattfinden wird, ich hätte nicht gegen das nächste Jahr gehabt.
Auch wir beide wünschen Dir eine schöne Weihnachtszeit und uns allen ein gutes Neues Jahr, das vielleicht auch wieder mehr Frieden bringt.

Varmt tack för Ditt julbrev.
Här kommer en enkel julhälsning från oss i Lund där Christina och jag firar jul. Barn och barnbarn är nu spridda över hela världen: Yngsta dottern med familj är i Sydney. Äldsta dottern med sin familj i Verbier och sonen hos svärföräldrarna i Göteborg.
Här nere bifogar jag två fotografier från 2023. Det första är från i somras från vårt lantställe Kvasa strax söder om Kivik. Några söker paddla kayak i Hanöbukten – ett hav som inte drabbats av den globala uppvärmningen. De flesta barnbarnen håller till vid poolen upp vid huset. Jag värmer upp poolen kring 28 grader under några intensiva sommarveckor. Det uppskattas av alla gäster.
Det andra fotot är från Pine Cliffs på Algarvekusten. Hit tog vi våra barn med respektive samt de nio barnbarnen för påskveckan. Det fanns ett krav under denna vecka – allt måste spela tennis och paddel. Helst med mig inblandad.
Så önskar vi att det kommande året blir ett bättre år än 2023. Mer fred och frid.

Thank you for your Christmas wishes. We wish you a belated Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
We met in 1976-77 when we were both visiting Berkeley, and then visited you in Stockholm a year or two later. Now, 45+ years later, we live in Boston, with a house on the coast of Maine, where we are celebrating the holiday season with our daughter.
